Today was a powerful day for Amazon workers in Shakopee as they pushed back against Amazon’s proposal to close their MSP5 warehouse. This proposal would result in hundreds of job losses, and has already caused confusion and harm to workers and their families.
We are proud to support these Amazon workers and stand in solidarity with them. People deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and not just be seen as robots. Amazon has a responsibility to its workers and should not turn a blind eye to the impact that this closure would have on their lives.
Amazon is not providing clear options for workers to be rehired in other facilities, leaving them in a state of uncertainty and stress. The fact that Amazon has plenty of open spots in Shakopee where they are closing the MSP5 warehouse means that they should be able to rehire these workers. We’re going to make sure that Amazon lives up to their public statements.
State Senator Erin Murphy, State Representatives Emma Greenman, and Brad Tabke, and all of the supporters who joined us today, show that the community stands with the workers in their fight for fair treatment.
We will continue to fight for the rights of these workers and make sure that Amazon treats its employees with respect. It’s time for Amazon to step up and do what’s right for its workers.
“We stand with Amazon workers and will continue to support their fight for better working conditions,” said the Awood Center’s statement. “We are calling on Amazon to refrain from closing the facility, and if the closure moves forward, we demand that Amazon transfer workers to nearby Amazon warehouses so they can keep their jobs.”
Amazon’s built it’s reputation on global logistics. But as Amazon proposes to close #MSP5, they won’t say to which of their facilities workers can go. It’s no good for workers or their families. If Amazon delivers to our doorsteps, they can deliver for their workers. They should. pic.twitter.com/ga6xCAlltZ
